Hi friends and thanks for stopping by to read my thoughts on why travel is about doing, not just dreaming.

Dreaming of travel won’t make it real. Taking those first steps towards your destination is what will get you there.

I find freedom in travel and I’m finally living my best life. When the realization hit that I couldn’t afford to retire in Canada, it was time to look for alternative living situations. I can stay in Canada and struggle in poverty or I can travel the world and enjoy a happy, healthy life.

I knew I needed to get up and go and I started planning. Housesitting and volunteering in places that include a place to stay were going to be my life for the next few years. Eventually I expect I will find a place I like enough to stick around and my nomad lifestyle will end and I’ll transition into becoming an expat.

You can’t walk the Camino de Santiago sitting on your couch

Talking about one step at a time – that’s life on the Camino de Santiago. My goal was to walk the Camino after I retired and became a nomad. Three months after I left my job, I was in Spain ready to walk 800 kilometers!

Talk about an overly ambitious plan – right!

Did you see my YouTube video of Day 1 on the Camino de Santiago? Yes, I look quite fresh. Before my day was over I’d walked uphill the equivalent of 250 flights of stairs! Thanks to my Garmin watch for that little piece of trivia.

37 days later I’ve just arrived in Santiago de Compostela – yay me! This video is me describing an annoying pilgrim in the top bunk of my bed the night before.

How do you get from St. Jean Pied de Port, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain?

One step at a time.

Imagining travel is good but action gets you there

I research some travel destinations a lot more than others. Right now I’m planning an epic adventure to South America. I’ve tallied up airplane fares and other forms of transportation and I’m costing out hotels times the number of nights I tentatively plan to stay there.

Then there are all the things I want to see and do.

Add them all up.

Then throw in another country, but discover it’s really tough to find flights there. And cheap flights at that. It is cheaper for me to fly from Vancouver than from one of the neighboring countries. Yikes!

OK, scratch that country off my list.

And then I’m reading the adventures of another solo female nomad enjoying a country that’s in the same general area, with much cheaper air travel. So hmmm. Now I need to look into hotels and places of interest.

OK, we can all see where this is going! Imagining is good, but action will get me there. I need to reserve and pay for the flight that’s the first leg of my journey. And then buy a ticket for the next leg of my journey. And so on…

I better get to it and turn my travel dreams into real life adventures!

And where will you travel to next?
