Hi friends, and welcome to the dilemma of why my Ford Escape radio is only working sometimes.
It all started in January, 2025 when I decided to become a nomad on 4 wheels and bought a 2013 Ford Escape. Little did I know that most of my trips would be in silence.
When I test drove the car, I didn’t have the radio on. After I bought it, I tuned in the radio and it all seemed normal.
For a few days.
I drove to a local park for a walk and when I drove away, this crazy static noise happened.
I’ve never heard a noise like that before. It sounded like my car was covered in ice that was breaking up. Or someone was using a metal cutter to get inside the car.
We’re not talking static like when the radio station is out of tune. This was a very loud, crackling noise and seemed to be coming from the roof. I pulled into the next parking lot, got out, and inspected the roof.
Nothing going on up there.
What the hell?
My next thought was something was going horribly mechanically wrong with this new-to-me car I’d just bought. Of course, no warranty on used cars.
I started up the car again. All was fine. Until I was almost back to where I was staying and that crazy loud crackling static started again. Now I wondered… Is this the radio? I turned off the radio and sure enough, the horrible noise stopped.
It happened again a couple of days later, and I turned off the radio. The next few times I drove the car it was hit or miss if there would be music or horrible crackling noise.
And then it seemed to sort itself out and behaved nicely for the rest of January and all of February.
Sync
There is a display console on some Ford vehicles, including mine, called Sync. This is a touch screen. From here I can control the music, the temperature, sync my iPhone, see a compass, see the time, and probably a few other features that I don’t pay attention to.
If the car came with a navigation system or a back up camera, this Sync system console is where it’d be displayed.
Sirius Radio
Shortly after I bought the Escape, I received an email from Sirius saying I was getting a three month free trial to their radio stations.
I attempted to get Sirius to work, but it didn’t. There’s a section on the Sync console for Sirius. A few channels were visible but when I tried to play them or do anything else in the Sirius mode, the display told me I needed a subscription.
So I gave up. I’ve gone all these years without Sirius, I can keep going without.
About a week after I bought the car someone from Sirius called to see how I was enjoying it and to tell me about a promotional offer of $5/month once the three month free trial ended.
“It doesn’t work,” I told her.
She said Sirius radio should have been working as soon as I bought the car and said she’d resend the signal.
From time to time I tried Sirius to see if it would work and kept getting the message about how I needed a subscription
I kind of forgot about it for awhile and then on February 28, I tried the Sirius setting and got music and was able to scroll through a few stations.
The next day when I took the car out, that horrible, crackling noise had come back.
Silence
For the next two weeks I drove in silence. And not by my choice – I love listening to music when I’m driving. Not only was there no music, but the Sync touch screen console was stuck. I couldn’t change stations or toggle it out of Sirius back to radio.
This also means I can’t listen to the CD player or plug my phone in and listen to a podcast. No audio is coming through the speakers.
That’s when I began a flurry of Internet searches only to discover many other owners were having the same problem. And not always with an Escape. Owners of other Ford vehicles were describing the same thing.
I tried pretty much every suggestion, the most popular one that worked for many was this:
It appears to be an iPhone/SYNC Bluetooth connectivity problem as mentioned in a previous response to this thread. Here is how I solved it. With the iPhone in hand and car turned off, go into Settings on the iPhone and turn off Bluetooth or alternatively, put the phone in Airplane mode. Then turn on the car. There will still be no audio and SYNC will report on the Home screen that it is searching for the iPhone. Wait until the search for the iPhone times out. Turn off your car. Turn the iPhone’s Bluetooth back on (or disable Airplane mode). Restart the car. The iPhone should reconnect to SYNC and normal audio should be restored.
I tried that method a few times, and it worked once. But that might have just been a fluke and the music was ready to start playing again.
I’ve tried both the Bluetooth on/off, the Airplane mode on/off, and even left the phone in the house out of signal, too far away to connect. Multiple attempts over weeks. It didn’t make any difference. It was just a fluke that it worked once.
Here are other things I tried:
Reset Sync to factory settings (tried twice – no difference)
Turning the radio on and off many times.
Adjusting the volume up and down
Leaving the radio turned off for weeks
Disconnecting my phone for weeks
Pushing the radio control buttons on the steering wheel
Pressing the switch for voice commands (worked once – fluke?)
Removing the F67 fuse and then putting it back in again (fuse not broken by the way…)
What I haven’t done
So far I have not disconnected the battery’s negative cable – one of the troubleshooting tips on the Car Gurus forum. I don’t have the tools to do this.
I have not changed any fuses. The Sync dashboard is all lit up. Everything lights up that should be there. That tells me the fuse isn’t broken. It’s just there’s no music playing.
I have not taken the car in to a Ford dealership. First of all – big bucks! Yikes! Also based on all the comments left by people who’ve taken this step, this glitch has stumped the Ford techs.
What about replacing it? Well, I don’t have an extra $1,000 kicking around to do put a new Sync system in. Also I’m leery because of the comments left by the people who did do this, only to have it crap out a few months later, leaving them in silence again.
Is this caused by Sirius?
About 10 or 12 days into March, the music starts again. I’d last played a Sirius channel and it was stuck there in silence for nearly two weeks.
During this time, I have a theory brewing. Is Sirius causing these audio problems?
Now that the Sync is unstuck, I quickly switched to an FM radio station.
Sadly, luck was not with me. I only got music a couple of times over the next month.
However I noticed a pattern. If I’ve been driving in silence and I hear that crackly horrible static, I know the music will start up again.
And unfortunately, if I’m in one of the lucky spells where I currently have music, hearing that static noise means I’m heading back into silence.
I’m still not unconvinced the Sirius signal is the reason behind the audio silence.
I had high hopes that once my three month free trial ended, that my radio would work normally. And for all that three months for free, I had one day where Sirius worked and then another day where it worked for about 20 minutes.
It’s a quiet drive
Aside from a day in early April when the radio gave me music, it’s been radio silence ever since! That’s over two months since the radio last squawked. And during the preceding six weeks, the music only happened to work three times.
And I’ve had some long drives. It takes me several hours to drive up to cowboy country to visit my horse. Though the first time I did that was late February when the audio was still working.
The second time all I got was the sounds of silence.
I’ve become a nomad on four wheels and am housesitting around British Columbia, also involving several hours driving between sits. All in silence.
Sigh.
And it gets me to wondering.
Yeah…
Who else is wondering why their Ford Escape radio is hit or miss?
This Ford audio problem has been written about on forums for years. Why isn’t there a fix by now?
And who else tries all the troubleshooting tips that worked for others only to be left with the sound of silence?
Gremlins
I’m flashing back to a PT Cruiser I used to own, and the topic of a post My Car has Gremlins.
The last few months I owned the PT Cruiser it was having weird electrical issues. And – yikes! – a car stalling is more serious than the radio not playing.
At least the Ford Escape is running smoothly with no engine or mechanical issues other than this stupid audio problem.
Why is my Ford Escape radio only working sometimes?
So what is the answer? Why is my Ford Escape radio only working sometimes?
I wish I knew. Obviously the audio system works. It’s just picky about when it will actually make some noise.
My Ford Escape comes with a voice command system. On the right side of the steering wheel is a lever to press up and tell the Escape what to do.
Play some music!!! Please!!!
When this whole silence/Sync screen frozen is happening, the voice commands do not work either. One time I pressed the lever up and the radio started up. Must have been a fluke and it was ready to play music anyway. Since then I’ve attempted to use the voice command lever many times and get no audio. Or whatever else it is I’m asking the car to do, like change the temperature setting.
After nearly three months of silence, on July 2 when I finished fueling up at a gas station, I got radio static when I started the car. Not the horrible loud crackling static. Just the kind of static you get when your car is too far away from the radio signal and has to be tuned to another station.
I pressed the Seek button on the Sync touch screen until a radio station playing music came on.
Oddly enough the air conditioning also came on. I can’t figure that one out. It wasn’t an overly hot day and I was driving around with the window down. The air conditioning works just fine whether or not the audio is working. I think the temperature setting may have been one of the last things I said to the voice control command.
The Ford Escape music sometimes playing and mostly not playing is kind of like the Caramilk chocolate bar. One of life’s unexplained mysteries.

Silence update section
I’ve decided to keep this post updated to keep track of the Escape’s Sync audio not playing.
For most of July, 2025 I had music. I don’t drive my car frequently, but I do drive it at least one a week to go grocery shopping. Maybe twice, if I’m doing something else. There were a couple of times I started the car and there was no audio. But when I got back in the car again after my stop, I had music.
The last time I had music was on August 1, 2025. In the morning the radio was working when I drove to my next housesit, a short drive, 10 minutes. Later in the day I had to move my car in the driveway. No music. On August 3, I went out for a bit, and returned. No music either direction.
August 5, 2025 – the music came on when I started the car! About 15 minutes later that crack noise like a rock hit the windshield ended the music. I had a few errands to run. After my first one, I returned to the car and the music came on, but died about 10 minutes later. I was in and out of the car a few more times but the music didn’t come back on.
