Hi friends, and thanks for stopping by to read From Stuck to Strong: Escaping the Vicious Cycle.
This is for all of us who feel like we’re never getting ahead because we’re always stuck inside a vicious cycle. And how it ends up making us feel worse.
Yeah, you hear me. I know I’m not alone.
What about you? Do you ever feel like you’re always caught in a vicious cycle? Like no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to get ahead?
Vicious cycle kicking in
Here’s the thing about the vicious cycle: when it kicks in, it doesn’t just make us feel worse financially. It makes us feel worse emotionally and physically, too.
Worry about how you’ll pay the rent, buy groceries, or make a minimum payment on the credit cards, and soon you’re waking up with aches, headaches, or that run-down feeling where you swear a cold is coming on. Stress takes its toll. Sometimes it’s not just about the money. It’s about our energy, our health, and even our motivation to get out of bed.
Honestly, if it weren’t for my dogs and horses needing exercise and food, there’d have been mornings when I wouldn’t want to face the world at all. My animals kept me sane, even when bad things kept happening.
And I know I’m not alone. For a lot of us, life got harder during the pandemic. Job losses, high grocery prices, overdue bills – it all piles up. Even if you kept working, maybe you worried about getting sick at work or bringing something home to your family. That’s another kind of cycle: stress feeding fear, fear feeding exhaustion.
So now what? How do we turn this cycle around?
Life is like a bike

One thing we all know about cycles – whether it’s life or an actual bike – you’ve got to keep moving forward. You can’t pedal backwards. Sure, you can coast or even roll backward down a hill if you stop trying, but the only way to really get somewhere is to keep pushing forward.
And here’s the good news: cycles turn both ways. The same way things can spiral downward, they can also spiral upward. The trick is choosing the path that helps things get better.
Start with one small change
It doesn’t take a huge overhaul to start breaking a vicious cycle. Sometimes one small change is enough to shift the momentum.
- Food swaps. One time I went grocery shopping. I wanted tuna. But it was $5 a can. Nope. I walked on by. Instead, I cooked up a batch of garbanzo beans in the Instant Pot. Not only cheaper, but healthier, too. That one decision saved me money and kept me from feeling like a victim of rising prices.
- Moving your body. You don’t need a gym membership. Go for a walk around the block. Take a bus to a new part of town and walk around to explore. Movement breaks up stress and helps clear your mind.
- Changing your perspective. That $5 I didn’t spend on tuna? I thought of it as a little win. It went into my vacation fund. It won’t buy me a plane ticket today, but keep saving $5 here and $10 there, and one day it adds up to something fun.
These small wins matter. They remind you that you’re not powerless. You’re making choices. And those choices move you onto a different cycle – one that spirals upward instead of down.
And another thing about those expensive cans of tuna. Even though I consider myself a pescatarian, albeit only occasionally, I’ve been moving away from that due to the high prices.
You don’t have to fix everything at once

The vicious cycle tells us it’s hopeless. That we’ll always be behind. That we’ll never catch up. But that’s not true.
You don’t have to fix all your money problems overnight. You don’t have to suddenly eat better, exercise every day, and have perfect sleep habits. Just pick one thing to change. One thing that makes you feel a little stronger, a little more in control.
Because the cycle works both ways. And you get to decide which way to turn it.
✨ Your turn: What’s one small change you can make today that shifts you onto a better path?
