Howdy friends, and thanks for stopping by to read You Know You’re a Horsewoman When…
Horsewomen are a unique breed.
We don’t all ride the same discipline.
We don’t all own horses.
Some of us have been riding since we were kids, while others discovered horses later in life.
But there are certain things that seem to unite us.
If you find yourself smiling as you read this list…
You just might be a horsewoman.
You Know You’re a Horsewoman When…
You automatically slow down when you see horses in a pasture. Even if you’re running late.
You talk to horses. And somehow expect them to answer.
You never arrive at the barn wearing your best clothes, because you know they’ll never be your best clothes again.
You think the smell of a barn is wonderful: fresh hay, leather, horses.
You always carry apples and always end up sharing them with a horse.
Your horse has heard all your secrets. And thankfully has never repeated a single one.
You greet the horses before the people. Because sometimes the horses are friendlier.
You don’t mind getting dirty. Dust washes off but horse memories don’t.
You know exactly where that mysterious bruise came from. Usually.
You think an afternoon at the barn is a perfectly good vacation.
At least once you’ve called in sick to work to spend the day with a horse.
You can spend an hour brushing a horse without ever feeling bored.
You look around every time you hear hoofbeats.
You’ve had hay in your hair and didn’t discover it until bedtime. Or the next morning.
Your boots have seen better days.
You still look at every horse trailer that passes you on the highway just in case you can catch a glimpse of who’s inside.
Your car has transported more hay and tack than actual passengers.
You know the difference between bay, chestnut, sorrel, buckskin, and palomino.
You have more photos of horses than of yourself.
You wish every vacation included a trail ride.
You think “just one more horse” sounds perfectly reasonable.
You stop to say hello to horses you’ve never met before.
You know exactly how to remove burrs from a horse’s tail. And from your socks.
You measure distance in “about an hour on horseback.”
You know horses are expensive, and somehow still think they’re worth every penny.
Welcome to the horsewomen club
Horsewomen come in all ages.
Some ride every day. Others ride only once in a while.
Some no longer have a horse of their own but still smile whenever they pass one grazing in a field.
Once horses become part of your life they have a funny way of staying in your heart.
If you found yourself nodding along to this list…
Welcome to the club.
We saved you an apple.
How many of these describe you? Let me know in the comments…and don’t be afraid to add a few of your own!
Happy Cowgirl Monday!
