It’s time for an update on what’s growing from the Garden Corner seeds I bought from Dollarama.
I bought watermelon, zucchini, and pepper seeds for .34¢ each at Dollarama. That’s an excellent price when seeds normally sell for upwards of $2 a package. I’d never heard of Garden Corner, but they’re packaged by McKenzie Seeds, a popular Canadian flower and vegetable seed company.
Is there a reason why the seeds are so cheap? Are they old? What are the chances these seeds will germinate and sprout?
SPROUTING SEEDS?
I planted my Garden Corner seeds on May 12, 2021, and according to the seed packets, they should all be sprouting within two weeks.
After two weeks, a few tiny zucchini and watermelon plants were poking out of the dirt.
They had to survive bug and slug attacks.
Throughout June, the zucchini seemed to be coming along nicely.
The surviving watermelon plants weren’t getting much bigger than the couple of inches they’d been stunted at.
There was no sign of any peppers. The only thing growing in that container was weeds.
GROWING IN A HEAT WAVE
In late June, the Greater Vancouver Area was hit with a heat wave.
And then all of a sudden it seemed like my watermelon plants were doubling in size every day!
HOW IS MY GARDEN GROWING?
It’s late July and I’ve got a couple of zucchinis that are big enough to pick and eat!
I have a couple of zucchini recipes that I like to make:
Chocolate Chip Zucchini Brownies and Greek Zucchini Meatballs. Though that should be called neatballs because there’s no meat in them. Both recipes freeze well.
Check out these photos of my planter garden!
Zucchini on the left and watermelon on the right.
Kind of looks like something has been scratching or maybe attempting to gnaw on that zucchini!
The watermelon is spreading out.
The size of the watermelons are between a golf ball and baseball.
Did you buy Garden Corner seeds from Dollarama this year? How is your garden growing?
