Hi friends, and thanks for joining me on Cowgirl Monday to read The Freedom Money Can’t Buy.

People often say money can’t buy happiness.

I’m not entirely convinced.

Money can buy plane tickets, hiking boots, camping gear, and yes… even horses.

Those things have certainly brought me plenty of happiness over the years.

But there comes a point where it’s no longer about what money can buy.

It’s about what an experience gives back.

That’s where horses are different.

The view looks different from a saddle

I’ve walked plenty of trails over the years.

I’ve hiked mountains, wandered through forests, and explored places all over the world.

But seeing the world from the back of a horse is different.

You move at a slower pace and notice things you would have missed from a car.

A deer rapidly disappearing into the trees.

Raccoons scampering up a tree.

The scent of pine after a summer rain.

Wildflowers growing along the edge of a trail.

The steady rhythm of hoofbeats beneath you somehow encourages you to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.

Freedom from screens

Life today revolves around screens.

Phones.

Computers.

Televisions.

Notifications that seem determined to interrupt every peaceful moment.

Horses don’t care how many emails are waiting for you.

They aren’t interested in your social media accounts or whether your phone has service.

When you’re riding, your attention belongs exactly where it should be.

On your horse, on the trail, and in the moment you’re living.

Bliss with horses. 8 ways to spend more time with horses.

That kind of freedom feels surprisingly rare these days.

Freedom from the clock

One of the things I always loved about riding was that time seemed to disappear.

The horse certainly wasn’t wearing a watch.

He wasn’t worried about deadlines or appointments.

He was simply getting off the farm, seeing different things, and enjoying the ride.

I often found myself doing the same.

For an hour or two, life became wonderfully uncomplicated.

Freedom from keeping up

The world spends a lot of time encouraging us to buy bigger houses, newer cars, and the latest gadgets.

Horses have never been impressed by any of those things.

They don’t care about labels, or job titles, or how successful you appear to other people.

They’re perfectly happy if you show up with a halter, a brush, and maybe an apple or carrot tucked into your pocket.

There’s something refreshing about that.

Rich moments don’t always cost much

Some of my favourite horse memories didn’t cost anything at all.

Watching my horse graze after a ride.

Life with Horses and the Trouble with Farriers

Sitting on a fence with a cold Coke on a warm summer evening.

Listening to nothing more than birds, a gentle breeze, and a horse contentedly chewing hay.

Driving home at the end of the day feeling tired, dusty, and completely happy.

Those moments didn’t require luxury.

They simply required slowing down long enough to notice them.

The richest life

People often measure wealth in dollars.

There’s nothing wrong with building financial security.

Even though I’ll probably never be in a place where I feel like I have financial security, I’ve learned that financial freedom isn’t really about having more money. It’s about having more choices.

Financial freedom gives us choices.

We can choose to travel.

And we can choose to retire.

We can even choose whether to buy the horse.

But for us cowgirls, the richest choices themselves became the real treasure.

The horseback rides.

The summer evenings at the barn.

The trails that disappear around a bend in the trees, farther than we can see.

The quiet moments shared with a horse who never cares how much money we have.

Those are the memories that stay with us.

The freedom money can’t buy

The older I get, the more I realize that freedom comes in many forms.

Sometimes it’s simply an afternoon with a good horse and nowhere in particular to be.

One of the greatest gifts horses gave me wasn’t excitement.

Certainly it wasn’t competition because I only did fun shows.

No ribbons or trophies. Just enjoying a fun day with other horse owners.

For a little while, my horses gave me the freedom to forget about everything else going on in my life.

And that’s the kind of freedom money can never truly buy.

Happy Cowgirl Monday!
