Hi friends, and thanks for stopping by to read Summer Evenings at the Barn. Just one of those things that makes you arrive home happy.
There are few better places to spend a summer evening than at the barn.
Not because there’s anything particularly glamorous about it, because often there isn’t.
There are stalls to clean, water buckets to fill, tack to put away, and horses that seem to think dinner should arrive an hour earlier than it actually does.
And yet, some of my favourite summer memories happened at the barn.
Long Summer Days
One of the best things about summer is how long the days seem to last.
After work, there was still plenty of daylight left for a ride.
No rushing.
No checking my watch.
Just enough time to saddle up, head down the trail, and enjoy being outdoors while the sun was still high enough to light the way.
Those evening rides weren’t about speed. They were about slowing down.
Listening to hoofbeats, feeling a warm breeze through the trees, and forgetting about everything waiting back at home – like scrubbing the toilet.
Ride While the Sun Is Still Up
People sometimes imagine romantic moonlit rides.
Not me. And it used to just bug the crap out of me when people suggested night riding.
Horses see far better than we do in low light, but I still like knowing where I’m putting my horse’s feet.
A hidden hole in the trail or a fallen branch. What about loose rocks that can make a horse stumble? Is there a predator watching us? I can’t see one in the dark.
These obstacles are much easier to avoid when there’s still plenty of daylight.
By the time dusk rolls around, I’m usually happy to be back at the barn, unsaddling my horse and reliving the ride.
Some things are better enjoyed before the sun goes down.
The Smell of Summer
Every season has its own scent.
Summer at the barn smells like fresh-cut hay, warm leather, sunscreen, dust, and horses. It’s a smell that’s hard to describe to someone who has never spent time around a barn.
But every horse person knows it instantly.
One deep breath, and suddenly you’re transported back to another summer, another ride, another unforgettable day.
It’s funny how memories can hide inside a scent.
The Best Place for a Picnic
If you ask me, there’s no better place for a picnic than out at the barn.
Nothing fancy. Just a sandwich, an apple, and an ice-cold Coke.
As one of my horse friends used to say: “There’s nothing better than a cold Coke at the barn.”
Yup, she was right.
As for the apple, I was never going to eat the whole thing myself. I’d enjoy most of it, then save the core for my horse.
He always seemed to know it was coming and often he didn’t let me get down to the core, nosing me and trying to steal the apple out of my hand.
Maybe that’s one of the things I miss most about those summer evenings.
Sharing something as simple as an apple with a horse while sitting in the shade after a ride somehow made the whole day feel complete.
Barn Friends
One of the nicest things about summer evenings was that nobody seemed to be in a hurry.
Someone would finish a ride and pull up a chair. Another rider would wander over to chat while brushing down their horse.
Before long, half a dozen people would be standing around talking about horses, upcoming trail rides, or laughing about something that had happened that day.
Horse people can turn almost any story into an entertaining one.
Those conversations became just as memorable as the rides themselves.
Those were the evenings I never wanted to end.
Summer evenings at the barn
One of the things I loved most about summer was that it stayed light so late.
I’d spend the evening riding while the sun was still high enough to safely enjoy the trails, then head back to the barn to unsaddle, brush my horse, and put everything away.
By the time I finally climbed into my car, it might be 10 o’clock at night.
I’d drive home tired, a little dusty, smelling faintly of horses and leather, and happier than I’d been all day.
Looking back, I don’t remember a single evening when I thought, “I wish I’d stayed home and watched television instead.”
Maybe that’s why those summer evenings still stay with me.
They weren’t expensive.
They weren’t exciting enough to make the evening news.
They were simply ordinary evenings spent with a horse I loved.

Happy Cowgirl Monday!
