Hi friends, someone once asked me what it’s like to start over after 60.
The short answer?
Humbling.
And terrifying.
The longer answer is that you suddenly become a beginner at an age when everyone assumes you should already have everything figured out. I may have already covered some of that in my post Finding Freedom: Turning Hard Times into a Life on the Road. Today’s post will be the shorter version of starting over after 60.
You will discover how much of adulthood was held together by routine.
You will realize that starting over requires an alarming amount of passwords.

You will spend entire afternoons trying to reset accounts you forgot existed.
You will learn how many people believe reinvention has an expiration date.
You will become very aware of how invisible older women can feel in certain spaces.
You will discover that fear and freedom are sometimes the exact same feeling.

You will learn to do things alone because waiting for company means your life never starts.
You will stop buying things meant for your “someday life.”
You will begin caring less about impressing people and more about sleeping peacefully.
You will become strangely good at surviving uncertainty.
You will learn how little you actually need.

You will discover that embarrassment loses its power when survival enters the room.
You will realize that most people are improvising adulthood no matter how polished they look online.
You will mourn parts of your old life while still knowing you cannot go back to it.
You will occasionally wonder if you’ve lost your mind.

You will occasionally realize you may have finally found yourself.
Because starting over after 60 isn’t about being brave every single day. Sometimes it’s just refusing to quit.
And nobody tells you this part: Freedom is terrifying right up until the moment it becomes yours.
Until that day comes when eventually you understand that rebuilding your life and ruining your old one can look remarkably similar in the beginning.

Starting over after 60 can sometimes take you to remote places that you only dreamed of visiting!
Finding a happy, peaceful existence after starting over at 60 – priceless!
