Hi friends, and thanks for stopping by to read 10 Horse Breeds I’d Love to Add to My Fantasy Stable. My fantasy stable is full of horse breeds I’d love to own if money, space, and common sense didn’t matter.
Since my birthday was yesterday, I thought I’d indulge in a little fantasy.
No, I don’t need another horse.
I’m perfectly aware of that.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t have a wish list.
And after a lifetime of owning horses, there are still plenty of breeds I’ve never had the privilege of calling my own.
So let’s get to my fantasy stable. My beautiful fantasy barn has 10 spacious stalls with attached paddocks that I need to fill.

Icelandic Horse — because who wouldn’t want a horse that can tölt? And they’re sturdy, sensible and apparently built for adventures.
Gypsy Vanner — those feathers! You could have a completely sensible reason for wanting one, but let’s be honest: the feathers.
Morgan — there’s something about that old-fashioned, versatile, “I’ll do whatever you want” horse that appeals to me.
Walkaloosa — I loved my Appaloosa and I’ve never forgotten what it felt like the time I rode a Tennessee Walking Horse. Combine the two breeds? Color and gait = dreamy!
Andalusian — because sometimes I just want to feel like I’m riding into a Spanish movie.
Fjord — compact, sturdy, sensible and ridiculously cute. (And that mane!)
Paso Fino — especially after all my travels in Latin America, this one could have a fun connection.
Friesian — because apparently every horsewoman is entitled to at least one completely impractical fantasy horse.
Mustang — because there’s something about a horse that has lived wild that would be fascinating.
Chincoteague pony — we all read the book Misty of Chincoteague and dreamt of visiting that island in Virginia to watch the Chincoteague ponies swim across the channel in the annual round up.
At 66, I’m not about to start collecting horses just because I saw a pretty picture on the internet.
Cajun is quite enough horse for me.
But birthdays are allowed to come with a little dreaming.
So I’ll keep my list.
You never know.
And if someone happens to show up with an Icelandic horse and a brand new truck and horse trailer rig, well… I never said no.
The horse I do not need in my fantasy stable
Of course, the truth is that I already have the horse who belongs in my stable.
Cajun may not be a Friesian, an Icelandic or a Walkaloosa. He’s just Cajun, a grade Quarter Horse.
And that’s probably why he wins. He’s been part of my life since the day he was born.

Happy Cowgirl Monday!
